Lauris nobilis
The bay tree was sacred to the ancient Greeks, and was associated with Apollo (the god of prophecy), poetry and healing. The priestesses of Apollo ate bay leaves before voicing Apollo’s oracles, and because bay leaves eaten in large quantities can be narcotic-like, it might explain the priestesses’ trances. Bay was considered to be an antiseptic and to guard against disease, and thus was dedicated to Apollo’s son Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine.
